One and all are invited to attend the Barony of Settmour Swamp’s 28th annual Celebration of the Thawing of the Mud.  As always Mudthaw will feature a wide variety of activities:  tournaments in Armored Combat, Rapier, and Youth Combat, Archery, Thrown Weapons, a brewing competition and an array of Fine Merchants.  Mudthaw will again be held at the beautiful and spacious Salaam Shrine in Livingston, NJ.

NOTE:  All combatants must troll in before they can sign up for any lists.  There will be an express check-in available on the field for combatants who pre-register.  Reserve ahead and avoid the morning lines at troll.

Their Majesties have declared that a grand Arts and Science competition will be held during Mudthaw to determine Their Arts and Science Champions.  They wish to extend an invitation for all artisans in the Kingdom to come and show off their best work, and compete for the honor of representing Their Majesties as one of the Kingdom’s Champions of the Arts and Sciences.

Come one, come all to the Brewing Competition to be held at Mudthaw in the fine Barony of Settmour Swamp
Saturday March 29th , 2008.

Thank you for your interest in the Brewing Competition at Mudthaw.

You can enter beers, cordials, wines, meads or others into the competition. This is not an A&S competition, so documentation is not a requirement, but we do request at minimum a list of ingredients and the process by which the beverage is made. Anything else is a bonus.

The competition will start around 1:00 though you can drop off your entries before then. Due to the time constraint with an early court we ask each person to enter only two beverages.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

In service, Lady Jehannine de Flandres

Come one, come all to the King’s and Queen’s Arts and Sciences
Championship to be held at Mudthaw in the fine Barony of Settmour Swamp
Saturday March 29th , 2008.

The outgoing King’s and Queen’s champion are offering a challenge to the
populace to enter this highly esteemed competition. We’re hoping to see
a lot of the hard work on the many interesting projects the populace has
been working on over this bitter winter.

The rules are as follows:

There is no limit to the number of items (or group of items entered as a
single body of work) that can be entered.

Multiple items entered as a single body of work must be related and will
be judged as a whole.

Every entry must be accompanied by documentation.

It is highly recommended that entries be submitted via email or mail in
advance. Include in entry: legal name, S.C.A. name, and description of
item(s)

Please send all entries or questions to:

Lisa Sciortino/Renye Wurm
162 Broadway Rd.
Trumbull, CT 06611

wurm55@juno.com

Registration for entries the day of the event will begin at 10:30am and
close at 12:30pm.

Judging Criteria

Each entry will be judged on:

*Workmanship: *Entry should be well put-together with attention to detail.

*Creativity:* High marks for creativity should be given if the item
meets any of the following criteria:

A: The item is original in design but is made using period techniques
and based on period design.

B: The entry is a re-creation but it was necessary for the entrant to
speculate and draw their own conclusions on some of the details based on
their research of historical sources.

C: Creative problem solving was used in determining how to get around
problems that came up during construction of an exact replica.

*Authenticity:* The period-relevance of the entry. Higher points will be
awarded for the use of period materials and techniques. Documentation
should explain any deviation from period techniques and materials.

*Documentation:* Written documentation should identify what the entry
is, a description of the item in period, its function/uses, information
about the re-construction techniques used, divergences from period
materials/techniques. Site sources should be included in the documentation.

*Overall:* Entrants will be judged on their overall understanding and
skill with the entry. Attention to detail in the display/presentation of
the entry will be a factor in scoring.

Each criterion will have a possible score of 10 points, for a total of
50 points. The highest single score will become the Queens Champion. The
King will select his own champion from among all the entries.

Be it known that at the event of Mudthaw in the Barony of Settmour
Swamp on the 29th of March, being also the occassion of the East Kingdom
Arts & Sciences Championship, in addition to all other events and
tournaments, there will be the first Annual Baroness' Choice Subtlety
Contest. This competition will take place during dinner at high table
and all entries will be admired and tasted by the visiting royalty, our
own King and Queen and the Baron and Baroness of Settmour Swamp, prize
to be awarded by Baroness Rhiannon and leftovers to be joyously shared
by all partaking of the feast.

This being the initial contest of this sort, there will be no preferred
theme, however, presentations will be highly regarded that use period
methods and ingredients. Also, the Baroness may look more favorably
upon those contestants who keep in mind that her persona is late 12th c.
Norman-Celtic and she loves Unicorns and Dragons.

So Best of Luck to All and Bring on the Sweets!

YIS,
Rhiannon
Baroness Settmour Swamp
